Important Visitor Information

Whether you’re visiting Amelia Island for a few hours or a few days, you’ll find many things to see and do in historic downtown Fernandina Beach.

The downtown area, which is named as a Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places, is essentially the 50 square block area between the Harbor Marina and 8th Street and three blocks north and south of Centre Street.

Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center (261-3248) is located at the foot of Centre St. The building was the Fernandina Beach Railroad Depot, built on the site in 1899 after the original was destroyed by a hurricane in 1898.

The Chamber has a wide array of free informative brochures and its staff will be happy to help you in any way they can. The Center is open Mon–Sat from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sun 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The other Visitor Center is located at Gateway to Amelia, near the Shave Bridge on A1A. It’s hours are Mon–Fri from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Public Library
The Nassau County Public Library—Fernandina Branch (277-7365) is at 4th and Alachua streets. The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat; 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mon and Thurs. Closed Sunday. The Library has iMac computers for Internet access but not for e-mail.

Amelia Island Museum of History
For history enthusiasts, the Amelia Island Museum of History (261-7378), located at 233 South 3rd Street, offers two walk-in history tours daily, Mon–Sat, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and one walk-in history tour on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Reservations are not required. The Museum contains many tools and artifacts of local land and marine archaeology plus a reference library and a research room. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mon–Fri.

Museum docents also conduct outdoor tours which include walking/driving tours of the North and South Fernandina Beach Historic District. These are for four or more guests and require an appointment with 24 hours notice.

Another daily outdoor tour is the Centre Street Stroll with a guide to explain the architectural treasures in the heart of downtown Fernandina Beach. The stroll is for one or more walkers who meet at 3:30 p.m. at the old depot (Chamber of Commerce building) on Fridays and Saturdays. (This tour is by appointment only June through August.) There are nominal charges associated with all the Museum’s tours. Call for information or visit www.ameliamuseum.org.

Post Office
The Downtown Post Office is at 401 Centre Street and offers complete postal services. The Main Post Office (261-4848) is at 1997 Sadler Road (see island map) and is a full “retail post office.”
