Important Visitor Information
Whether you’re visiting Amelia Island for a few hours
or a few days, you’ll find many things to see and do in
historic downtown Fernandina Beach.
The downtown area, which is named as a Historic District in
the National Register of Historic Places, is essentially the
50 square block area between the Harbor Marina and 8th Street
and three blocks north and south of Centre Street.
Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center (261-3248) is located
at the foot of Centre St. The building was the Fernandina Beach
Railroad Depot, built on the site in 1899 after the original
was destroyed by a hurricane in 1898.
The Chamber has a wide array of free informative brochures and
its staff will be happy to help you in any way they can. The
Center is open Mon–Sat from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and
Sun 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The other Visitor Center is located
at Gateway to Amelia, near the Shave Bridge on A1A. It’s
hours are Mon–Fri from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Public Library
The Nassau County Public Library—Fernandina Branch (277-7365)
is at 4th and Alachua streets. The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat; 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mon and
Thurs. Closed Sunday. The Library has iMac computers for Internet
access but not for e-mail.
Amelia Island Museum of History
For history enthusiasts, the Amelia Island Museum of History
(261-7378), located at 233 South 3rd Street, offers two walk-in
history tours daily, Mon–Sat, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.,
and one walk-in history tour on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Reservations
are not required. The Museum contains many tools and artifacts
of local land and marine archaeology plus a reference library
and a research room. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Mon–Fri.
Museum docents also conduct outdoor tours which include walking/driving
tours of the North and South Fernandina Beach Historic District.
These are for four or more guests and require an appointment
with 24 hours notice.
Another daily outdoor tour is the Centre Street Stroll with
a guide to explain the architectural treasures in the heart
of downtown Fernandina Beach. The stroll is for one or more
walkers who meet at 3:30 p.m. at the old depot (Chamber of Commerce
building) on Fridays and Saturdays. (This tour is by appointment
only June through August.) There are nominal charges associated
with all the Museum’s tours. Call for information or visit

Post Office
The Downtown Post Office is at 401 Centre Street and offers
complete postal services. The Main Post Office (261-4848) is
at 1997 Sadler Road (see island map) and is a full “retail
post office.”
Theater
Amelia Island has two theater groups offering live performances.
The season runs from September to June with an occasional summer
performance in July. Call for information and reservations.
The Amelia Community Theatre is at 209 Cedar Street (261-6749)
and the Fernandina Little Theatre is at 1014 Beech Street (277-2202).
Fernandina Beach City Hall/Police
The City Hall and Police Station are located at the corner of
2nd and Ash streets. City Hall: 277-7305.
