American Beach

American
Beach was established in the 1935 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis,
Chairman of the Board and President of the Pension Bureau of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company. It is located between Summer Beach and Amelia Island Plantation.
It was the only beach open to African Americans until the late 1960s. People would drive from all over the country to visit
this beach.
It is one of the oldest African-American residential communities
and vacation beaches in the United States and is included on
the Florida Black Heritage Trail. Tours of the area can be arranged
by calling 904-261-0175.
